Weekly News Update - 15th May 2020

School children around the world use Microsoft Teams to speak to WHO experts

A Lancashire school has teamed up with UNICEF and the World Health Organisation to create an online "global classroom" that has let children in the UK and around the world learn more about Covid-19 by connecting them with leaders from the two organisations.

The event was broadcast using Microsoft Teams and organised by Scarisbrick Hall School. During the event, children from 193 countries were invited to put their questions to Henrietta Fore, Executive Director of UNICEF, Tedros Adhanom, Director General of WHO and Samuel Eto'o, the Global Ambassador for the FIFA World Cup 2020.

The experts fielded questions from children in the UK, United States, France, Finland and Cambodia, and shared their advice on how young people can make a difference in beating the pandemic, as well as how to keep physically and mentally healthy during lockdown.

Find out what some of the children asked here.

How the Microsoft Store in London is helping customers during lockdown

Since opening in July 2019, Microsoft's flagship London store has been a huge hit; but the Covid-19 pandemic has meant its doors have had to close for a while.

Keen to give back to the community which they say has made them feel so welcome since opening last year, associates at the store have worked with local councils and housing associations to offer LinkedIn Learning workshops to apprentices, graduates and interns.

Attendees at the virtual workshops can enjoy sessions on personal development, building a more professional LinkedIn profile to help with job searching, how to use Microsoft Teams for remote working and how to use Microsoft's accessibility tools.

Jade Alogba is a Community Development Specialist at the store and part of the team facilitating the workshops. She told the Microsoft UK News Centre: “I started my career working in housing, within the local authority, so it’s been really fun to be able to give back. The workshops support people who are in the same position that I was in.

“We provide free training to them, so they know how to build their profile on LinkedIn so they can shine as best as they can. We also did a workshop on Microsoft’s accessibility tools and taught them how to master working from home, just to make sure that they feel fully equipped to be able to adapt to this new situation that we’re all in.”

There are more virtual training and workshop sessions planned for the coming weeks. See the schedule here.
